The project

A fair price for their coffee beans is far from guaranteed for many coffee farmers in Peru. Coffee plantations are located high in the Andes, in remote and mountainous parts of the country, making it difficult to access international markets.

Farmers therefore join forces, for example through cooperation with Juan Santos Atahualpa (JSA). By working together, they strengthen their position, gain more influence, and receive a better price for their coffee. This results in higher incomes for farming families and creates more room to invest in sustainable coffee cultivation.

What does Juan Santos Atahualpa do?
JSA buys coffee directly from the farmers, giving them greater certainty about the sale of their harvest. The cooperative ensures fair international sales and supports farmers in obtaining certifications such as the Fairtrade label. It also invests in basic infrastructure, such as building better roads, so farmers can transport their coffee faster and more safely.

Through their collective efforts, they improve not only the quality of their coffee but also the living conditions of the farmers and their families.

In just two decades, Peru transformed into an upper-middle-income economy, with poverty rates dropping from 60 percent in 2002 to 24 percent in 2013. However, many coffee farmers still struggle with low incomes, price instability, and the effects of climate change.

The Juan Santos Atahualpa coöperatie (JSA) addresses these challenges by uniting small-scale farmers and strengthening their position in the international market. By working together, they gain access to fair prices, direct sales channels, and certifications like Fairtrade, leading to greater income security and sustainable production. The cooperation also invests in essential infrastructure, such as roads, making it easier for farmers to transport their harvests. As a cooperative, JSA empowers farmers to increase their incomes, and create better futures for their families and communities.

This way, the cooperation ensures a sustainable product and a fair income, supporting communities in Peru.
