The project

Last summer, we travelled to Kyrgyzstan, where we met entrepreneurs who borrow from Bailyk, a microfinance institution. Urkuya is one of them.

Urkuya owns a shop selling household appliances. It is filled with televisions, air fryers, washing machines, tableware and all kinds of other household products.

She originally started her business in a shipping container, but a loan from Bailyk enabled her to move to a permanent shop in a better location. She now employs five people.

Bailyk provides microloans to entrepreneurs across Kyrgyzstan, particularly in rural areas where access to financing is limited. Women entrepreneurs often struggle to obtain loans from traditional banks. One reason is that they may have less access to land and other assets that can be used as collateral.

Your investment in Bailyk contributes to greater financial inclusion for entrepreneurs in Kyrgyzstan.

Bailyk Finance is a women-led microfinance institution dedicated to strengthening the position of women in Kyrgyzstan. By providing financial literacy training, entrepreneurial support, and working capital, Bailyk helps female entrepreneurs, who make up 59% of its clients, grow their businesses, support their families, and drive economic stability.

In a country where 32% of the population (about 2 million people) lives on less than €1.60 per day, access to finance is a powerful tool against poverty. It fosters entrepreneurship, creates jobs, reduces emigration, and improves living conditions.

With 51 branches across Kyrgyzstan, Bailyk also serves low-income individuals without access to traditional banks, ensuring economic opportunities reach even the most remote areas.
