In the Kyrgyz countryside, Aida and her husband Saiitpek run their small farm together. However, a prolonged drought hit them hard: the hay harvest was disappointing and there was not enough feed for their herd. With a microloan from Bailyk Finance, they were able to stock up on animal feed and restore their pastures

The project

Climate change is a daily reality for farmers in Kyrgyzstan. Drought means less grass, scarcer hay and rising prices for animal feed. For Aida and Saiitpek, who keep cows and sheep next to their home, this hit hard. When the grassland withered, they had to sell part of their livestock, losing a steady source of income.

A loan from microfinance institution Bailyk Finance changed the situation. With the loan, they were able to buy animal feed, bring their pastures back into condition and expand their herd again. Now that the grassland is growing again and the animals have enough to eat, they are building a more stable income from their farm.

Bailyk Finance has a clear focus: strengthening the economic position of women in Kyrgyzstan. By now, 59% of its clients are women. In rural areas, financing is hard to obtain, especially for women who cannot use land as collateral. Bailyk Finance closes this gap with tailored microloans and additional training in agriculture, financial management, financial literacy and climate-smart entrepreneurship.

With more than 50 branches in both cities and rural areas, Bailyk Finance also reaches entrepreneurs in remote regions who would otherwise remain outside the formal financial system. In this way, thousands of farmers are building an independent livelihood in a changing climate.
